Why Team Leadership Experience Matters in Coaching

Feedback from our coaching clients suggests that the coach’s experience in leadership and business management matters a lot to them, their coaching experience and the outcomes they gain.

Personal experience helps the coach:

  1. Spot issues that you might be missing
  2. Spot future challenges further in advance than you will, say as a consequence of decisions being made now
  3. They are better equipped to ask you the right questions – the questions that will get you exploring and thinking about the core issues rather than focusing on symptom issues which are caused by the core issues
  4. They can give you feedback and comparison against a high bar of leadership and business success. This gives you a realistic picture of where you are AND how to bridge those gaps
  5. They can give you practical approaches, know what won’t work and what should work. They can share tried and tested experience rather than just theory which will give you a lot more confidence.
  6. Finally, they can give you potential answers if you can’t find your own and they can share their stories with you to expand the options for you to consider.

Coaching should not be telling you stuff or giving you the answers. Coaching is guiding you to find your own answers, so you build expertise and self-sufficiency for you to be very successful on your own. Coaching is about taking away crutches, rather than giving you different ones.
